Instructions for use

Surface Preparation

Joint Preparation
The joint surface must be clean, dry and free from oil, loose particles, cement laitance and other contaminants which may affect the adhesion. A thorough wire brushing, grinding, sand blasting or solvent cleaning may be required to expose a clean and sound substrate. The compressible joint filler shall be cut back to expose a uniform joint depth.

Joint Design

ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS is an elastomeric sealant and may be applied to joints between 5 and 50 mm wide. Joints which are expected to experience cyclic movements should be designed to an optimum width: depth ratio of 2:1, subject to the overriding recommended minimum sealant depths set out below:

  • 5 mm for metals, glass and other non-porous surfaces
  • 10 mm for all porous surfaces
  • 20 mm for trafficked joints and those subject to hydrostatic pressures.

To control joint depth, use CORDOFLEX closed cell polyethylene backer rod, vertical joints only. If joint depth does not allow for backer rod, use polyethylene bond breaker tape to prevent three-sided adhesion. Do not prime the backer rod.

Sealing slot widths should be designed in accordance with the recommendation of BS 6093 to ensure that sealants remain within its stated movement capacity.

Priming
SEAL PRIME should be applied to clean, dry surface prior to the installation of backer rod or bond breaking tape. The primer shall be applied by a brush in a thin coat application and shall be allowed to become tack free prior to the application of the sealant. The joint edges shall be re-primed if the sealant installation is not carried out within 3 hours of application of the primer. For obtaining a clean and neat finish, masking tape shall be applied on both the edges of the groove before applying the primer.

Mixing
ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS is a two component product that must be mixed at the time of application. Add the entire content of the Hardener (part B) to the base (Part A) and mix for one minute till obtaining homogenous mix. For mixing, use a heavy duty slow speed drill (300-500 rpm) with a sealant mixing paddle. Scrape down sides as much as possible during mixing and avoid lifting mixing blade out of material to minimize entrapment of air. The pot life of the mix depends on temperature and weather conditions.

Application
Apply ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS immediately after mixing by pouring directly into the joint. Fill the joints from the bottom up to the exterior surface, avoiding bridging which may form air voids. Use the sealant tool to compact the sealant into the joints and to achieve a smooth concave polished surface.

Any masking tape which has been applied at the joint edge should be removed before the sealant cures.

Cleaning
Clean the used tools with SOLVENTE 10 immediately after completing the job and before the product dries. Hardened material should be removed mechanically.

Recommendations

  • Do not apply on damp and contaminated surfaces
  • Sealant joint movement should not exceed ±25% of joint width when installed in a 2:1 width to depth ratio.
  • ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS PG is not recommended for use in vertical joints.
  • ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS should never be applied on damp and contaminated surfaces.
  • Do not over paint ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS
  • ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS PG is not compatible for use in areas with Slope Gradient > 10%.
  • ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS must be fully cured before permanent water immersion.
  • ELASTOSEAL CTP PLUS should not be used in direct contact with materials containing pitch or bitumen.
